25 Custom Sporting Rifles by Some of America’s Most Renown Makers
by Michael Petrov

These rifles are posted to present the flavor of a couple of dozen of the more prominent between-the-wars American custom gunmakers. Rifles made prior to 1940 represent the area of my collecting and research interests. It begins with the first rifle Ludwig Wundhammer made in 1910 and winds up with the custom rifles Paul Jaeger and Frank Pachmyr made before World War II.

All of the rifles are.30-06 caliber with just two Mausers noted among the 23 Springfield sporters. Over the years, the greatest challenge to me has been to “discover” unknown makers recognized by the style and craftsmanship of their rifles. Some of these rifles show workmanship as good as, and in some cases better than many well-known makers of the day. I have identified three rifles by the “unknown” maker presented here that were clearly made by the same hand, but I have no strong indication of whom that might be.

If you have a custom rifle, particularly a Springfield and you do not know who made it I would be pleased to try to identify it for you. I also welcome questions about pre-WWII American custom Rifles. We will do our best to post both the questions and the answers, along with suitable photos in these pages.
